V-LINE at Saudi Water & Power Forum in Jeddah

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, 11/01/2008

The V-LINE Group will be participating in the fourth Saudi Water and Power Forum conference and exhibition opening today in Jeddah under the theme: Change, Innovation and Sustainable Development. This will be its fourth consecutive year of participation.  Now established as the major annual event for the Kingdom’s Water and Power Industry, SWPF 2008 is aimed at the companies and investors hoping to capitalize on the additional 30GW of power generating capacity targeted by the Water and Electricity Ministry for 2020.

Since Saudi Arabia is undergoing a period of growth, SWPF 2008 will focus on the huge potential for investment, and on how the water and power industry can take steps toward a successful and sustainable future.

Water and power are closely linked in the Kingdom, as some of the processes that desalinate seawater also produce electrical power.

The generation of the targeted increase of 30GW of power capacity by 2020 — effectively more than doubling the current installed capacity of 29.1GW — will cost an estimated $90 -100 billion. Additionally, the state-owned Saline Water Conversion Corp (SWCC) has estimated that through 2020 it will need to spend another $50 billion on water projects, many integrated with new power generation capacities, to meet the Kingdom’s rapidly growing water demand.

The total related infrastructure figure rises to a $624 billion investment over the next 15 years    to service the 45 percent population increase to 36.4 million that is predicted by 2020.

The statistics of the Kingdom’s water supply give clues as to where the priorities lie. Total water supply is 52 million cubic meters per day but water produced by desalination plants is 3 million cubic meters per day.

V-LINE Saudi Arabia Ltd. has positioned itself in establishing a new local presence this year to offer a new broader suite of services for the Power and Water Industry in the Kingdom.

At the conference, Dr. Adil Bushnak, Chairman of the Bushnak Group and a member of the forum’s advisory committee said “We need a lot of investment in the water sector, almost $10 billion a year, for a long time to come”. “The Kingdom should initiate programs for improving maintenance and operation of this infrastructure” he noted.

“Our aim is services guarantying the lowest total cost in maintaining the immense investment in plant assets being made, whether by private or government investors”, said Detlev Daues Chair holder of V-LINE Saudi Arabia Ltd to Dr. Adil Bushnak when they met at the V-LINE booth. “We have developed MRO Supply Chain Solutions for the Petrochemical Industry which could very easily be implemented in PPP projects”, Mr. Daues said.
